PTE Academic is a single-session computer-based test with intensive microphone and keyboard use. Because some tasks assess two skills at once, preparation should prioritise high-impact task types rather than only section headings.
Current section pages list 9 Speaking & Writing, 5 Reading and 8 Listening task types, for 22 in total. The 2025 update added two speaking tasks.
Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Retell Lecture depend on content as well as oral fluency and pronunciation. Use a natural volume; shouting or exaggerated intonation does not improve intelligibility.
Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks contributes integrated scores, so context, grammar pattern and collocation must be considered together. In Re-order Paragraphs, follow reference words, connectors and general-to-specific flow.
Recordings are played once. Notes serve different purposes: Summarize Spoken Text needs structure and main ideas, whereas Write from Dictation needs exact word sequence and spelling.
The overall score is not a simple arithmetic average of the four skill scores. Integrated tasks and task weights contribute differently, so an “equal number correct in every section” model is unreliable.
